Why I Created This is DEI

The phrase “diversity, equity, and inclusion” has been politicized, misunderstood, and even weaponized. We’ve all seen the headlines, the social media debates, and the buzzwords flying around. But behind the noise lies a critical truth: DEI isn’t just a trend—it’s work rooted in justice, fairness, and humanity.

As someone with decades of experience in racial justice and antiracism, I’ve witnessed firsthand the evolution of this work. Long before DEI became a corporate initiative, I was deeply engaged in fostering equity and challenging systemic racism in the spaces I worked and lived. Over time, what started as grassroots activism became a field of its own, with new frameworks, terms, and strategies.

But something feels off today.

Cutting Through the Noise

In recent years, DEI has become a lightning rod for controversy. Media outlets and politicians have turned it into a culture war issue, leaving many wondering: What is DEI really about? For me, the answer is simple—it’s about people. It’s about creating spaces where everyone, regardless of their background, can feel seen, valued, and empowered to thrive.

Yet, too often, the real work of DEI is drowned out by sensationalism or reduced to check-the-box exercises. The misinformation surrounding DEI frustrates me because it clouds what should be a clear and powerful purpose: fostering a fairer and more inclusive world.

This is why I created This is DEI.

A Place for Clarity and Truth

This is DEI is my effort to cut through the noise and focus on what truly matters. It’s a space to share real, honest, and informed perspectives on DEI—what it is, how it looks in practice, and why it matters.

I’m not here to push spin or sugarcoat the challenges. I’m here to tell the truth, whether that means examining the impacts of political attacks on DEI or reflecting on what this work demands from those of us who believe in it.

I also want this to be a space where others—especially those who feel alienated by the current DEI discourse—can find clarity and empowerment.

Grounded in Experience, Driven by Passion

My journey in this work has always been rooted in racial justice, and while I’ve embraced the broader scope of DEI, I never forget where it began. It’s personal to me, not just professional.

This is DEI reflects my belief that everyone deserves access to the full picture—not just the headlines, not just the myths. I want this platform to demystify DEI and encourage people to engage with it authentically, regardless of where they are in their understanding.

What You Can Expect

From this platform, you can expect:

  • Truthful Insights: Honest perspectives on what’s happening in the world of DEI, from political implications to workplace challenges.

  • Personal Reflections: My authentic voice, informed by years of experience and my ongoing commitment to learning.

  • Empowerment: Tools, stories, and ideas to help you act, advocate, and engage with DEI meaningfully.

Looking Ahead

Creating this platform isn’t just about sharing my perspective; it’s about building a community of people who care about making real change. DEI isn’t easy work, but it’s vital—and together, we can do it with integrity, clarity, and purpose.

Welcome to This is DEI. Let’s cut through the noise and focus on what matters.
